Why is Portugal a separate country from Spain?

So, Portugal was always independent from Spain. The idea of them being the same country comes from the fact that Spain always tried to appropriate the Portuguese conquests as their own, and underestimated Portuguese culture. Sadly, for many years, the Portuguese did the same.
